Tourlyx against TheGrint

These two aren’t really competitors, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. TheGrint is an app for a golfer: handicap, GPS, stats, a feed. Tourlyx is software for the person running the event. The comparison is worth making only because organizers often start by asking whether the app they already have can run the outing.

Tourlyx leads

4

of 6 categories — running the event, the money, competition formats and leaderboards, and the organizer’s job generally

TheGrint leads

2

everything belonging to the individual golfer — GPS, a lasting handicap index, long-term stats — plus its own amateur tour

Feature by feature

“Leads” means clearly stronger for the tournament organizer — not that the other side lacks the feature entirely. Rows reflect what ships in Tourlyx today versus TheGrint’s published product.

Tourlyx

Handicap that persists between events

TheGrint maintains an index for the golfer; Tourlyx stores the index you enter for a tournament

TheGrint

Tourlyx

Tourlyx

Where each one wins

Tourlyx owns

  • You are the one organizing — collecting entry fees, making the draw, paying the winners
  • The event has a prize pool, side pots or a charity take that has to balance
  • Team formats: scramble, foursome and twosome prizes, Chapman, Ryder Cup
  • You need flights, contests, sponsors and printed sheets for the day
  • Your golfers should not have to install an app or make an account to play

TheGrint owns

  • You want to track your own game — handicap, stats and trends over years
  • You want a GPS rangefinder on the course
  • You play casual rounds and want them all logged in one place
  • You want to join an existing amateur tour rather than run your own event
  • You want a free app for yourself, not software for a group

The honest read

TheGrint is a good app and Tourlyx does not replace it. If what you want is a rangefinder, a handicap index and your stats over time, Tourlyx has none of that and is not trying to. Keep using it.

The confusion starts when an organizer asks whether the app everyone already has can run Saturday’s outing. It can’t, and not because it is missing a setting: there is no pairings engine, no entry-fee ledger, no flights, no prize table, no way to settle a skins pot. Those are the organizer’s problems, and TheGrint is built for the player.

In practice most groups use both, and that works well. Your golfers keep their own app for their handicap and their GPS; you run the event in Tourlyx, and they never have to install anything or create an account to play in it — the cart sign has a QR code and that is the whole onboarding.
